"WHAT’S REAL?" MEDIA LITERACY & SOCIAL ACTION TRAINING

MDR supports the power of youth to impact their personal development as well as music industry practices through a media literacy and social action process designed to “Inform, Inspire and Initiate Action.”

INFORM
Youth learn about music industry practices for album creation and distribution, artist promotion and concert promotion. Youth learn about the relationships between record labels, media companies and radio stations, and explore practices such as payola. Youth also explore elements prevalent in mainstream media such as negative stereotypes, violence, machismo and misogyny. Youth are challenged to ask the question, “What’s real?” when exploring lyrics and images in media and contrasting them to their personal realities.

INSPIRE
Youth explore their personal power in impacting their reality by influencing media practices. Youth are versed in traditional and non-traditional social action tactics in media justice and reform. Participants are taught specific MDR social action tactics, such as engaging in email, letter writing and call in initiatives, as well as using their consumer power to create a greater demand for more socially responsible music.

INITIATE ACTION
By participating in a series of listening sessions, youth are exposed to a variety of socially responsible professional artists. They assess the music and select artists and songs that they would like to positively promote over the following few months. Youth and facilitators are given a series of social action tools to utilize over several months of service learning activity. They are trained in the use of these tools and are connected to a nationwide MDR Youth Coalition engaged in the same activities.
