MOTHER’S DAY RADIO PETITION EXCERPT:
One of our supporting organizations, Teen Outreach Progam (TOP) St. Louis, is a dynamic group of youth, 14-17 years of age. In an attempt to support the creation of songs with beats and rhythms that they enjoy, performed by some of their favorite artists, with lyrics that respectfully represent the women that they learn from and value in their daily lives, the TOP teens have this to say:
“We are behind this movement because women brought us into this world and it is not right to disrespect them. Upon researching lyrics, we found lyrics that objectify women, such as saying they should sell their bodies or strip. We found lyrics that call women inappropriate names, such as b***h, wh***, trick, slut, etc. We would like to hear songs on Mother’s Day weekend of 2007 with a Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Rap flavor that show women as queens, equals, and people who bring life into this world.”

Imagine turning on your radio and flipping through the stations. No matter what station you turn your dial to women are being honored, mothers are being recognized and valued, and no songs are being played that denigrate or sexually defame your daughters.
With your simple act of signing your name to the Mother’s Day Radio petition, this vision is one name closer to fruition. Sign your name and pass our petition along. We thank You.

Your Voice MATTERS!
Help to stop the denigration, objectification, and marginalization of women that is found in popular music today. Cease the identity de-formation that is found in our young kings and young queens as they align themselves with the images of “pimps” and “hoes” that are glorified in the lyrics of many popular songs.
Call for a day of rest from the denigration and a day to uplift the value, honor, wisdom and strength of our mothers, sisters and daughters. Let us truly see the forums that we financially support give a gesture of respect to women on Mother’s Day weekend of 2007.
Read and sign our petition and three requests to the record labels, media companies, recording artists and community, calling for a day where we elevate the true value of women through lyric and song!
